Bonds Pulls Off All-Star Voting Comeback

Posted Jul 2, 07 4:00 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Barry Bonds will start in his fourteenth All-Star Game after a surprise eleventh-hour flurry of votes. The 42-year-old slugger beat out Alfonso Soriano for a slot in the NL lineup, after some highly publicized championing by San Francisco's clubhouse.

"This is the one I'll remember forever," said the veteran, who's been dogged by steroid rumors and unpopularity inside baseball—the Chronicle reports he fared poorly in the players' vote. But Bonds, who also picked up his 2,900th hit in a 13-0 rout of Arizona yesterday, can bank on home-town solidarity: He'll patrol the outfield on July 10 at AT&T Park.
