Disney's Rat Trounces 'Die Hard'

Posted Jul 2, 07 7:56 AM CDT in Business Arts & Living

(Newser) – "Ratatouille," Disney's critically hailed animated flick about a gourmet rat, dominated the box office in its opening weekend, scoring $47.2M to the latest Bruce Willis vehicle's $33.15 million.  Also bested was religious-themed romp "Evan Almighty."

Although a solid debut, "Ratatouille" had the weakest premiere of any Disney's Pixar Animation movie since 1998's "A Bug's Life." Pixar's last five films, including "Toy Story 2" and "Cars," had opening weekend grosses between $57.4M and $70.5M. Disney officials blame the relatively slow start on stiff competition.
