Star-Studded Wallets Come Out for Obama Fundraiser

Dem rakes in $11M as McCain scoffs

(Newser) – Barack Obama pulled down $11 million between two star-studded Hollywood fundraisers last night, in the biggest single-night take of his campaign, reports the Los Angeles Times. The candidate mixed it up with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Chris Rock, and Barbra Streisand —who capped off the night with a performance —as John McCain took the opportunity to mock the celebrity shindig before a working-class Ohio crowd.

“There’s no place I’d rather be than right here with the working men and women of Ohio,” he told the crowd. McCain held his own Hollywood fundraiser last month, but banked far less money for his trouble. Obama’s camp dismissed such cultural attacks. The stock market’s troubles have “reminded people that this is not a game,” Obama told the crowd. “It’s not a reality show, no offense to any of you.”

This is not a game. This is not a reality show—no offense to any of you. This is not a sit-com. This is for all the marbles. There is a high stake to this election. - Barack Obama

If we can cut through the nonsense and the lipstick and the pigs and the silliness, then I’m absolutely convinced that we’re going to win. - Barack Obama

They've heard the whole Republican whoop-de-do before, and this time, I don't think they're going to subscribe to it, because there's so much at stake. - David Axelrod
