US investigators to help Yemeni authorities

(Newser) – Yemeni police today rounded up 30 people, all suspected of links to al-Qaeda, in response to yesterday's attack on the US embassy that killed 16. The US has pledged to send agents to help local authorities "investigate whether the suspects are linked" to the attack, a security source tells Reuters.

(NEWSER) - A car bomb at the gates of the American embassy in Yemen has caused at least 16 casualties, a US spokesman inside the embassy told AP. Two car bombs were followed by a gun battle between attackers and guards, said Yemeni officials. Hundreds of heavily armed troops have now surrounded the embassy. (AP) - A suicide bomber struck a mosque in a Pakistani tribal region during Friday prayers, officials said, killing at least 40 people and wounding 85 others in the deadliest attack in the country in recent weeks. (NEWSER) - With the situation in Yemen deteriorating rapidly, the US yesterday ordered all nonessential diplomats and the families of all US Embassy staff to leave the country. "The security threat in Yemen is extremely high due to terrorist activity and civil unrest," the State Department writes in a new advisory, saying that the violent clashes ripping through Sanaa "may escalate without notice."
