Argentine Duo Evokes Evita Era

Posted Jul 3, 07 5:21 AM CDT in World

(Newser) – A popular Argentine political couple is evoking images of President Juan Perón and his powerhouse wife Eva, the London Times reports. Popular Senator Cristina Fernandez is a whispered favorite to take her country's top spot now that her husband, President Néstor Kirchner, has decided not to pursue a second term.

Fernandez is the candidate of the popular Peronist party, founded by the Peróns. Polls show strong support for her bid to become her country's first elected female president, although Argentina has a history of strong women in politics that only begins with Evita—Cristina won her Senate seat over the wife of Kirchner's predecessor.
