Benoit Bought 'Excessive' Steroids

Doctor gave wrestler 10 times normal dose, feds charge

(Newser) – Over the last year Chris Benoit's doctor was prescribing the wrestler a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids every three or four weeks, the DEA said in court papers made public today. The steroids, which can cause paranoia, depression and violent outbursts, may have been a factor in the murder of Benoit's wife and child, as well as his suicide.

The doctor, Phil Astin, has been indicted for improperly prescribing drugs to two other patients, but not Benoit. The complaint said Astin had written prescriptions for about 1 million doses of controlled substances over the last two years, excessive for a sole practitioner in rural Georgia. Benoit had visited Astin's office on June 22nd—the day of the murders—although it is unknown what, if any, drugs were prescribed that day.
