TV station probes ethics of journalist's coverage despite liaison

(Newser) – Telemundo officials yesterday suspended Mirthala Salinas, the Los Angeles TV reporter and anchor who covered of the break-up of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's marriage even while she was having an affair with him. Salinas was placed on a leave of absence while the Spanish-language broadcaster investigates whether she breached journalistic ethics, the Los Angeles Times reports.

News executives were upset that the anchor hired a public relations firm and issued a statement without her bosses' approval, sources told the Times. Villaraigosa, who began his relationship with Salinas last year, separated from his wife of 20 years last month.

(NEWSER) - A news anchor in Chicago got into hot water with parents for an on-air rant against Santa Claus, reports the Huffington Post . After a segment on how to handle kids' Christmas expectations in a lousy economy, Robin Robinson of Fox Chicago told her co-host: "Stop trying to convince your kids that Santa is Santa. That's why they have these high expectations. They know you can't afford it, so what do they do? Just ask some man in a red suit. There is no Santa." (NEWSER) - A Chicago TV station has apologized for quoting a 4-year-old boy out of context—in a way that just happened to make him sound like a wannabe gangster. A journalist reporting on a drive-by shooting that killed two teens in the boy's neighborhood asked him: "When you get older are you going to stay away from all these guns?" The boy responded "No," and said when he gets older, "I'm going to have me a gun!" The station ended the clip there, making no mention of the fact that the boy added, "I'm going to be the police!"
