(Newser) – At a trumpet player's cry of "naked van", unruly band members at the University of California Davis stripped to their skivvies on a trip, ignoring their director's orders to get dressed, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The prank fell so flat with the director that he's filed a complaint with the administration, citing several "disturbing and offensive" behaviors that he says has driven him to take stress leave.

John Pike has not only been photoshopped into countless art images , he has become a target of Anonymous, the New York Daily News reports. The hacking collective has released the officer's personal details, including his cell phone number and home address. "We have no problem targeting police and releasing their information even if it puts them at risk because we want them to experience just a taste of the brutality and misery they serve us on an everyday basis," warns a message from Anonymous. Protesters hit the street to rip rich regents

(NEWSER) - University of California students stormed a Bank of America branch in downtown San Francisco yesterday, pitched a tent and chanted, "Shame, shame, shame" before 100 of them were arrested and hauled out by city cops. The bank invasion was part of an afternoon of protest by students demonstrating against the UC regents, calling them rich tuition boosters who don't care about education. One of the regents is on the board of the Bank of America. Demonstrators had planned to target a meeting of the regents in the city, but officials canceled it, fearing violence. UC Muslims Appealing Free-Speech Conviction

They got fines, community service for disrupting speech by Israeli ambassador

(NEWSER) - Ten Muslim students are appealing a conviction for disrupting a speech by an Israeli ambassador presented at a Unversity of California campus. The controversial case is seen as a test of the right to dissent. The students last year shouted out preplanned phrases to interfere with the ambassdor's speech on the Irvine campus about US-Israeli relations. The men were convicted last month of "willfully" disrupting the talk, and were sentenced to comunity servicie, fines, and probation. An attorney for the students said the law used to convict them makes protest illegal. “When we censor free speech we are taking away one of the fundamental issues that has made our democracy, not survive, but thrive,” he told the Los Angeles Times . Despite Money Woes, UC Gives $140M in Raises

Move designed to keep pace with union salaries

(NEWSER) - The University of California is in the midst of what’s advertised as its worst fiscal crisis ever, with lost state funds leading to tuition hikes and layoffs—but that’s not stopping it from handing out $140 million worth of merit-based raises, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The raises will go to non-union employees, who’ve had their wages frozen for four years even as union employees got regular raises thanks to previously negotiated contracts. More»
