John McCain is scheduled to make his long-awaited return to The Late Show with David Letterman tonight, the Chicago Tribune reports—and may bring his running mate with him. “He hinted when I talked to him … that maybe he’d be bringing Sarah Palin,” Letterman said on last night’s show, then added, “We know that’s not gonna happen.”

Letterman savaged McCain since he skipped a scheduled appearance last month to return to Washington, then remained in New York. Now, Letterman is skeptical about the Palin hint, too. “I think he was trying to make me feel better,” the CBS host said. “Like, ‘Oh, I know we’ve got the hook in Letterman now.’ … But I don’t think she’ll be here. Miss Alaska will probably not be here.” (More David Letterman stories.)
