Wine for Breakfast? A Fan Makes His Case

Posted Oct 16, 08 4:17 PM CDT in Glossies Opinion Arts & Living

(Newser) – The eggs are scrambling, the bacon is sizzling, the toast is, well, toasting. So kick back and pour yourself a glass of red zinfandel, writes Ryan D'Agostino in Esquire. This isn't some sophomore-year-of-college attempt to undo the excesses of the night before, but rather an innovative approach to the day’s most important meal. The wine, which "must be red, is bracing," D'Agostino writes, and "gives you the perfect amount of buzz, and it doesn't make you groggy."

It's also a firm step forward in your day, driving "a wedge between your cottony, postsleep morning and the rest of your day." And for the author's brethren, living north of Milan, the appropriateness of a glass of Chianti in the morning is so obvious, making the case is "like going on and on about the virtues of having a doughnut."

Once a week, try. Make the eggs. Refrigerate a bottle for 10 minutes, crack the foil seal, drive the corkscrew into the tender cork, and yank it out. Thwip. Pour some instead of OJ today, and sit down and relax. - Ryan D'Agostino, Esquire

At this hour, red wine—it must be red—is bracing. Afterward, you somehow feel more prepared. Calm. Confident. One glass gives you the perfect amount of buzz, and it doesn't make you groggy.
