Cabrera Steps Away from HR Derby Plate

(Newser) – Marlins' slugger Miguel Cabrera won't compete in the upcoming Home Run Derby because of an injured left shoulder, he announced yesterday. The showdown still promises its share of flares into McCovey Cove, however: Last year's champ, Philly's Ryan Howard, will defend against Prince Fielder, Justin Morneau, Alex Rios, Vlad Guerrero, Albert Pujols, and Magglio Ordonez.

Officials are pondering a replacement for Cabrera. A-Rod, who has an MLB-best 30 HRs, has opted out of the mix. The Giants' Barry Bonds, who says he has "nothing to prove" in the slug-fest, has faced sneers for snubbing his home-town crowd. The State Farm Derby is slated for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
