Woman Admits Making Up Tale of Carved 'B'

McCain volunteer told police that mugger cut one onto her face

(Newser) – The blogosphere smelled a rat, and they were apparently right. The woman who claimed that an Obama-supporting mugger carved a "B" into her cheek has confessed to making up the tale, KDKA-TV (Pittsburgh) reports. The 20-year-old told police that her black mugger got ticked when he saw her McCain bumper sticker. Given that she Twittered before and after the alleged assault and didn't seem all that concerned about getting medical attention, bloggers heaped scorn upon her story from the get-go.

Police weren't buying it, either. They grilled Ashley Todd for five hours last night and again today when her story conflicted with ATM data and with her own earlier accounts of exactly what transpired, then administered a polygraph test. The Texas woman is expected to face charges.

She's had a pretty terrible 24 hours. She's hanging in there. Everyone has been very supportive. In our view, this was a random crime that escalated into something worse. - Ethan Eilon, GOP committee member,
