TV Anchor Dies Days After Attack

(Newser) – An Arkansas newscaster who was brutally beaten in her home earlier this week died today from her injuries, reports her home station of KATV. Anne Pressly, 26, had been sedated in intensive care since the assault and unable to communicate with police or her family. Doctors said only yesterday they were hopeful she'd recover. Police have no suspects or motive.

Pressly's mother found her Monday morning when she didn't answer phone calls. Her attacker severely beat her around her head, face, and neck, then took her purse. Authorities haven't ruled out the possibility of a stalker, but they have no leads on that front. In addition to her Arkansas anchor work, Pressly had a bit role in Oliver Stone's movie W.

Unfortunately, the officer was chasing himself. How? (NEWSER) - For the first time in its history, Russia plans to prosecute a dead man. Police intend to bring to trial the tax-evasion case of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who died in custody in 2009, reports the New York Times . Russian authorities claim they reopened the case so Magnitsky's supporters could exonerate him. The real reason, assert the supporters, is so the government can intimidate them and perhaps clear the name of the officials Magnitsky had condemned for corruption. More»

Alyssa Bustamante tells Elizabeth Olten's family: I'm so sorry

(NEWSER) - A Missouri teen who pleaded guilty to murdering a 9-year-old girl in a killing she described in her journal as "ahmazing" has been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, the News Tribune reports. Alyssa Bustamante, 18, made a statement before the sentence was handed down, telling the family of Elizabeth Olten, "If I could give my life to bring her back, I would. I just want to say I'm sorry for what happened. I'm so sorry." Bustamante also received 30 years on the count of armed criminal action, notes the Tribune; the sentences will run consecutively. More»

Homeless Killer Suspect Accused of 2 More Murders

Itzcoatl Ocampo to be charged with stabbing Raquel Estrada, Juan Herrera

(NEWSER) - Authorities believe Itzcoatl Ocampo, the 23-year-old Iraq veteran charged with stabbing four homeless men to death in California, also killed two other people—ones that he knew. Ocampo will be charged today with the murders of Raquel Estrada, 53, and her 34-year-old son, Juan Herrera, the mother and brother of a friend Ocampo has known since high school. That friend, Eder Herrera, had originally been charged with the murders, but those charges were dropped Friday, CNN reports. More»
