49ers Coach Singletary Drops Trou to Motivate Team

(Newser) – In the annals of coaches' motivational stunts, it might not rank with "win one for the gipper," but the 49ers' Mike Singletary sure caught his players' attention. With his team trailing 20-3 at halftime last week, Singletary—in his first game as a coach—dropped his pants in the locker room and pointed to his behind to illustrate the players' effort, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Alas, the 49ers still lost, 34-14.

"I used my pants to illustrate that we were getting our tails whipped on Sunday and how humiliating that should feel for all of us," Singletary blogged on the team website. "I needed to do something to dramatize my point; there were other ways I could have done it but I think this got the message across."

(NEWSER) - The San Francisco 49ers watched their chance at the Super Bowl slip through their fingers yesterday when the New York Giants converted a fumble to a field goal in overtime. The Giants tapped a 20-17 victory and their fifth trip to the Super Bowl. Two key errors by back-up punt returner Kyle Williams cost the Niners the game. Williams, filling in for the injured Ted Ginn Jr., muffed one punt in the fourth quarter to set up a Giants touchdown and a 17-14 lead. Niners kicker David Akers ended up tying the score with a 25-yard field goal. But in overtime, the ball was knocked from Williams' hands to give the Giants the ball at the 24-yard line. More»

(NEWSER) - The New England Patriots overcame a 21-point deficit today with 49 unanswered points to rock the Buffalo Bills 49-21, the AP reports. The win earned the Pats home-field advantage and the AFC's top seed. Tom Brady threw for 338 yards and finished with the second-most passing yards in NFL history, 5,235—behind only Drew Brees, who threw for 5,486 this year with the New Orleans Saints. More»

(NEWSER) - Wearing a "F*** the 49ers" T-shirt to a 49ers game wasn't the brightest idea, but it could prove deadly for a man shot two to four times in the stomach last night following a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders. The 24-year-old is in critical condition, reports the San Francisco Chronicle . Police detained a 20-something in Raiders attire on a party bus a short time later. A second man was shot in a parking lot; it's unclear if the two shootings were related, though police believe all three men attended the game at Candlestick Park. More»

NFL Stars Donate Brains to Science

After death, players' brains will be used to help research into concussion injuries

(NEWSER) - Three NFL players have agreed to donate their brains after they die to help scientists better understand sports brain injuries, HealthDay reports. Matt Birk of the Baltimore Ravens, Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals' Sean Morey are the first active NFL players to join the brain donation registry at Boston University School of Medicine. University scientists are studying the link between sports brain injuries and dementia. More»
