Why Can't the Media Cheer Up?

(Newser) – Her mission was to talk about women and heart disease. But Laura Bush couldn't help telling Larry King how she really felt about the media portrayal of her husband's war in Iraq. "Many parts of Iraq are stable now," the First Lady told King. "But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody."

Bloggers had a field day. "The First Lady doesn’t know what she’s talking about . . . there are 185 insurgent and militia attacks every day," one noted. Another  pointed out that on the day of the her appearance, separate bombings—including one targeting Iraq's vice president—killed at least twenty people. And Democrats take note: Laura also said that she understood that the war is "wearying" for the American public, but added that it will "probably" last into the next administration."

    Cheney: 'I Erred on Insurgency' Dick Cheney admitted yesterday that he was wrong when he said the Iraqi insurgency was "in its last throes" in 2005. "My estimate at the time was wrong, it turned out to be incorrect," the VP told CNN's Larry King. He said he had been optimistic that elections and a constitution would "undermine the insurgency," but "that clearly didn't happen." More »
