Fake NYT Declares War Over
This fake New York Times front page was distributed throughout New York City (scanned by Gawker).

“IRAQ WAR ENDS” declares the New York Times—or at least, an amazingly realistic imitation. A group of pranksters blanketed New York City with a fake edition of the paper of record this morning, reports Gawker. Dated July 4, 2009, the paper sports other headlines spun from liberal fantasies: “Maximum Wage Law Succeeds,” “Courts Indict Bush on High Treason Charge” and “Bike Paths to be Expanded.”

Distributing the fake was a huge undertaking. Squadrons of volunteers were rallied online via BecauseWeWantIt.org, and instructed via email to pick up unspecified “materials” from UHauls parked around the city. Though the group intended to remain anonymous, Gawker got a copy of the email and noticed that it was sent from The Yes Men, a liberal prank group that specializes in such elaborate stunts.
