Steroids Case Leaker Draws 2½ Years

Posted Jul 13, 07 11:38 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – A lawyer who allowed reporters access to transcripts of confidential testimony about steroid use in baseball was sentenced to 30 months in prison yesterday. The penalty is the most serious yet to stem from the government's intensive performance-enhancing drug investigation.

Tony Ellerman, a former rodeo cowboy and attorney for the BALCO chemical lab, showed testimony from Barry Bonds, Gary Sheffield and other ballplayers to two San Francisco Chronicle reports. Ellerman's lawyers requested a lighter sentence, referencing President Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby. The judge replied, "if Mr. Ellerman is dissatisfied with his sentence, he should seek a commutation from the president."
