Priest: No Communion for Obama Voters

Catholic authorities repudiate priest who told Obama supporters to do penance

(Newser) – South Carolina's Catholic authorities have overruled a priest who told Obama voters they weren't fit to partake in Holy Communion, the Greenville News reports. The priest wrote in a church bulletin that voting for a pro-choice candidate constituted "cooperation with intrinsic evil" and urged Obama voters to do penance "lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

The diocese monsignor said the priest was not speaking for the church and that partisan politics had no place on the pulpit. He asked Catholics to support the president-elect "with a view to influencing policy in favor of the protection of the unborn child." The priest, who said he had never meant his instruction to be seen outside the parish, has received thousands of emails from people praising or attacking his position.

Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil. - Reverend Jay Scott Newman

As administrator of the Diocese of Charleston, let me state with clarity that Father Newman’s statements do not adequately reflect the Catholic Church’s teachings. - Monsignor Martin T. Laughlin

Separation of church and state does not mean preventing any individual from speaking their personal beliefs, regarless of how foolish they are.
