South Carolina's Catholic authorities have overruled a priest who told Obama voters they weren't fit to partake in Holy Communion, the Greenville News reports. The priest wrote in a church bulletin that voting for a pro-choice candidate constituted "cooperation with intrinsic evil" and urged Obama voters to do penance "lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

The diocese monsignor said the priest was not speaking for the church and that partisan politics had no place on the pulpit. He asked Catholics to support the president-elect "with a view to influencing policy in favor of the protection of the unborn child." The priest, who said he had never meant his instruction to be seen outside the parish, has received thousands of emails from people praising or attacking his position.
