Supermodel Karolina Kurkova's recent turn on the catwalk for Victoria's Secret had curious spectators wondering what happened to her belly button. The Czech stunner offered no explanation for her smooth stomach, which has only a minor indentation where her navel should be, and her agent says only that "she's not an alien." The BBC goes in search of navel intelligence.

Kurkova's condition may be the result of abdominal surgery at birth, though adult hernia surgery can also cause it. Those looking to achieve modelesque perfection can undergo an umbilicoplasty—a purely cosmetic procedure that reshapes the existing navel. One congenitally unbuttoned Brit admits he considered going under the knife, but he says, "You only have to look at Michael Jackson to realize it's probably best to live with what you've got."
