A day after her star-studded funeral, Lady Bird Johnson was buried yesterday in a private ceremony at her family's Hill Country ranch, not far from a field of her beloved wildflowers. Thousands lined the route from Austin to Stonewall, the Star-Telegram reports, to say a final goodbye at the conclusion of 5 days of ceremonies honoring the former first lady.
Her grave lies alongside that of President Johnson, who died in 1973. Lady Bird Johnson's work in preserving the country's landscape endeared her to countless Americans, but yesterday's gathering was for family and friends. Grandson Lyndon Nugent gave the graveside eulogy: "You taught us to leave the world a better place than we found it."
