A Seattle artist who created a Christmas tree ornament advocating the impeachment of President Bush will not see it hanging on the White House after all, the Washington Post reports. The first lady ordered that it be yanked down. “Oh, dear,” said Deborah Lawrence. “This doesn’t really surprise me. But it’s disappointing that I won’t get to see it on the tree.”

The flap began when Laura Bush asked members of Congress to pick artists from their districts to make ornaments. Democrat Jim McDermott picked Lawrence, and she chose to salute McDermott—a harsh critic of Bush who has called for his impeachment—in return. She decorated her ornament with anti-Bush messages, and it went on the tree until media reports pointed it out. (More George W. Bush stories.)
