(Newser) – Lil Wayne led the field at the Grammy nominations last night, AP reports. The rapper's eight nominations included one for album of the year for Tha Carter III—the first album to go platinum in its debut week since 2005. Coldplay came in second with seven nominations, which also included one for album of the year for Viva la Vida.

Lil Wayne and Coldplay's albums will be competing with the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss collaboration Raising Sand, Radiohead's In Rainbows, and Ne-Yo's Year of the Gentleman. One surprise omission from the top categories was Katy Perry, who was left out of the record of the year and best new artist nominations, despite the fact that her I Kissed a Girl was one of the year's biggest hits.

Lil Wayne hasn't done anything original, all of his hits have lyrics from other writers.
