Familiar Carrey antics seem tired in positivity flick

(Newser) – Yes Man, a Jim Carrey comedy about a guy who can’t say no, is “too sluggish and slapdash a vehicle for its star’s prodigious wackiness,” writes AO Scott in the New York Times. “Carrey looks too grown up, too tired to plunge into the reckless silliness that the story demands, and the story doesn’t really demand enough of it.”

Carrey’s “rubbery faces that worked years ago now feel tired; without his antics there's nothing to see,” writes Elizabeth Weitz in the New York Daily News. “If you own the superior Liar Liar, you might as well stay home and watch it again.” But Michael Philips of the Chicago Tribune says the film “starts out wobbly but ends up quite nicely, primarily because Carrey has a wonderful acting partner in Zooey Deschanel.”

In the New York Times , AO Scott calls it a “thin, unconvincing movie made likable by the charm and skill of its cast and by a script peppered with wit and insight.” The humor, however, comes from “obvious, picked-over places.”

True story of gay con-man highly divisive

(NEWSER) - Some critics are head-over-heels for I Love You Phillip Morris; others feel quite the opposite about the film, in which Jim Carrey plays a gay conman. (It's currently favored by 76% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences give it a lesser 55%.)

At the New York Times , Stephen Holden loves the picture: “With his manic glare, ferociously eager smile, hyperkinetic body language and talent for instant self-transformation, Mr. Carrey has rarely been more charismatic on the screen.”

MacGruber a Mixed Bag

Low-ball comedy splits the critics

(NEWSER) - The latest big-screen foray by Saturday Night Live cast members has split critics, with some loving and others despising MacGruber's raunchy satire:

SNL movies tend to suck, “but MacGruber breaks the jinx,” writes Peter Travers of Rolling Stone . It sends up '80s action flicks “with a sense of style and unabashed affection.” Star Will Forte “is having a ball, and the feeling is contagious.”
Kyle Smith isn't catching it. You can tell it came from TV, he writes in the New York Post : “ It features the pacing of C-SPAN, the production values of the public-access channel, the writing acumen of Home Shopping Network.”

Our Family Wedding Not a Marriage Worth Saving

(NEWSER) - Our Family Wedding, a Rick Famuyiwa film about the wedding of a Mexican-American girl (America Ferrera) to her African American boyfriend (Lance Gross) is little more than a culture-clash cliché that Claudia Puig finds about as "funny as census data." Most critics agree:

It's a "perfectly good idea for a comedy," writes Roger Ebert for the Sun-Times , but it deals with the culture clash with the finesse of a mediocre sitcom. "Difficult problems are sidestepped, arguments are overacted, and there are three food fights involving wedding cakes."
