(Newser) – Five young children and three other people were killed early today when a suicide bomber attacked a voter registration site in southeastern Afghanistan, reports CNN. Some 15 of the 50 people wounded were children walking to school when the bomber's car exploded. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

(AP) - A suicide bomber blew himself up today during a funeral in northern Afghanistan, killing 10 people, including a member of the national parliament, a government spokesman said. The attack occurred as mourners were leaving the funeral in the town of Talaqan, said a spokesman for the governor's office in Takhar province. Fifteen people were injured in the blast, he said. The spokesman said the dead included parliament member Abdul Mutaleb Baik. More»

(AP) - Former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani was assassinated today, dealing a harsh blow to peace efforts after a decade of war. Officials say a suicide bomber concealing explosives in his turban entered Rabbani's house in Kabul and blew himself up; four of Rabbani's bodyguards also died and a key presidential adviser was wounded. Rabbani, who was president of the Afghan government that preceded the Taliban rule, headed the country's High Peace Council, which was set up by the Afghan government to work toward a political solution to the decade-long war. (AP) - Nearly 80 American soldiers were wounded and two Afghan civilians were killed in a Taliban truck bombing targeting an American base in eastern Afghanistan, NATO said today, a stark reminder that the war in Afghanistan still rages 10 years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The attack was carried out by a Taliban suicide bomber who detonated a large bomb inside a truck carrying firewood, NATO said. (NEWSER) - A suicide bomber detonated today at a memorial for the slain half-brother of Hamid Karzai, killing four in an attack that comes as prominent Afghans rethink their own security in the wake of Ahmed Wali Karzai's assassination, allegedly at the hands of a close family associate. The Afghan president wasn't present at the service, but a number of high-level officials were and a noted cleric was among the dead, the LA Times reports.
