Like millions of other children, the Obama girls returned to school today. Unlike the rest of the nations’ kids, they were accompanied by a cadre of police, Secret Service agents, and media, the Washington Post reports. The Obama family’s new life in Washington is off to its official start, with the president-elect acknowledging that leaving his Chicago home yesterday left him “choked up,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

Though his now-empty Chicago house got him emotional, Obama’s thoughts will certainly soon turn to the full plate ahead of him now that he’s in Washington. Scheduled to meet with congressional leaders today to discuss an economic stimulus package, he said goodbye to his girls before their motorcade left the hotel for school this morning at 7:10am, accompanied by mom Michelle.
