(Newser) – Police in Germany spoiled the nuptial plans of a pair of childhood sweethearts, AFP reports. The 6-year-old boy and his girlfriend, 7, secretly plotted to elope to Africa together. They sneaked out of their houses at dawn on New Year’s Day with suitcases, food, swimming gear—and the girl's 5-year-old sister, to serve as a witness.

The trio made it as far as the train station in the city center before a suspicious guard stopped them. He called the police, who explained to the disappointed couple that they would have a hard time getting to Africa without a plane ticket or money. "They'll have the chance to put their plan into action at a later date," said a police spokesman.
