(Newser) – Palm's new Pre smartphone is the hottest product at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show by a long stretch, a smitten Lance Ulanoff writes at PC Magazine. Ulanoff heard a lot about the Pre before yesterday's rollout, but was still blown away by the smartphone's impressive specs, fresh interface, and groundbreaking innovations like the below-screen gesture area.

The Pre could be "the Palm, maybe the device, I've been dreaming about," Ulanoff gushes, thanks to the full-sized touch screen and QWERTY keyboard his iPhone and Blackberry Bold lack. Ulanoff hasn't had the chance to fondle a Pre himself yet, but he believes yesterday's demo could be a "phoenix moment" that signals Palm's just-in-time rebirth.

(NEWSER) - AT&T stopped offering unlimited data plans in 2010, but some of the customers who already had the plans are finding "unlimited" doesn't necessarily mean what they thought it meant. AT&T has started "throttling" the top 5% of data users, cutting their download speeds by up to 99% and making their phones basically useless for anything other than phone calls and text messages. One throttled user found his phone went from loading a web page in a second to taking nearly two minutes; it happened two weeks into his billing cycle, when he reached 2.3 gigabytes of data. He pays $30 for his unlimited plan, and a limited data plan—for the same price—offers more data than that: 3 gigabytes per month. Nokia Posts $1.4B Loss in 4th Quarter

But sales of Windows smartphones are meeting expectations

(AP) - Mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. today posted a fourth-quarter net loss of $1.4 billion as sales slumped 21% even as the company's first Windows smartphones hit markets in Europe and Asia. The loss compares with a profit of $981 million in the same period a year earlier. Nokia said net revenue—including both its mobile phones and its network divisions—fell from $16.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010 to $13.2 billion, with smartphone sales plunging 23%. More»

(NEWSER) - Will outraged consumers convince Verizon to backtrack on its newest fee , just as they did with Bank of America ? Perhaps: The New York Times notes that yesterday's announcement of the $2 fee, which will be levied against customers who make one-time bill payments using a credit or debit card over the phone or online, led to quite an uproar on Twitter . (Sample tweet : "Scumbags, as if we don't pay enough for crappy signals and service ... Verizon will charge fee for paying bill.") Some upset customers set up online petitions , complained in Verizon forums, and planned to flood the company with paper payments in order to ensure it makes no profit from the new fee. More»

(NEWSER) - If you’re reading this on your smartphone, you might want to go wash your hands now: A new study out of London finds that one out of six cellphones has fecal matter on it. UK researchers swabbed 390 mobile phones and the British hands that used them, and found that 16% of both were contaminated with E. coli bacteria—which, yes, comes from poop, Time reports. More»
