Bonds Sits One Out Before Crack at Record

(Newser) – After playing all 13 innings of a loss to Atlanta on Tuesday, Barry Bonds sat out last night's match-up at his home park in San Francisco to rest up. "He's just getting a day," said the team manager, insisting that the 43-year-old slugger still aims to crack Hank Aaron's home run record during this seven-game homestand.

Newcomer Fred Lewis patrolled left field, and Pedro Feliz assumed cleanup duties. The move was largely to protect the aging slugger from injury. Last week a grueling 30-inning series against LA benched Barry for his next three games. The Giants are doing their best to keep Bonds healthy, hoping he'll chalk up a record 756th dinger before the club leaves town next Tuesday.
