More than 1,000 protesters took to the streets of downtown Oakland this evening to protest the New Year's Day shooting of an unarmed black man by a transit officer, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The protest comes hours after the officer, who has since resigned, was arrested and charged with murder.

"What I feel the evidence indicates is an unlawful killing done by an intentional act," said the local DA. Authorities arrested Johannes Mehserle in Nevada, and he waived extradition. He is accused of shooting 22-year-old Oscar Grant in the back at a commuter train station, an incident captured on videotape. (More BART stories.)
