(NEWSER) - Slate wants to fix the Oscars—"Academy Awards ceremonies are laughable, even to those of us who love them," the site declares —so it's asking writers and editors to offer up their proposals in advance of the Feb. 26 ceremony. Lowen Liu's idea : Allow for a re-vote on the major categories 10 years later. (NEWSER) - "So, where was I?" began Ricky Gervais, drink in hand, as he sauntered on stage to open the Golden Globes. "Nervous?" He wasted no time throwing out a few insults, noting that he was hosting the show on NBC, "America's third biggest network. Or is it fourth?" He moved on to the show itself, calling the Globes "just like the Oscars, except without all that esteem." More of the best lines from the night:

• "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton," Gervais said, going on to call them louder, drunker, and "more easily bought."

'Homeland' also does well at the Golden Globes

(NEWSER) - Be honest: You tuned in to the Golden Globes tonight mostly to see what Ricky Gervais would say . But awards were handed out too, and The Artist and The Descendants were the big film winners. Both won best picture and best actor in their respective categories (comedy or musical for the former, drama for the latter), and The Artist also won best original score. 'Golden Globes' host makes a 'Beaver' joke...

(NEWSER) - While making a joke about "Jodie Foster's beaver" in his Golden Globes monologue, host Ricky Gervais noted that he hadn't seen it himself—and that he had "spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven't seen it either. That doesn't mean it's not any good." TMZ wonders whether Gervais was implying Foster is a lesbian—a longstanding Hollywood rumor the actress has not spoken about publicly.
