Hey Barack: Ditch the Inaugural Glitz

Dump the extravagance and raise money for charity

(Newser) – Over the course of the presidential campaign, we saw some big spectacles from the Obama camp—but this inauguration is "so contrived it's almost ridiculous," and it doesn’t suit the new president's style, writes John Heilemann in New York. For a man who likes to do things differently, wouldn’t it have been more fitting to stage a “minimalist” inauguration in DC, and have “mini-inaugurals” in every state, all benefiting local causes?

Such an alterna-inauguration would have set a tone “focused not on celebration but on civic engagement,” built Obama’s network, shown how he’ll use the Web, and made a “concrete” difference nationwide. Plus, it would have been a political boon for the president-elect—and “most of all," Heilemann writes, "it would have been genuinely new.”

So, what are we celebrating? Let's see: illegal campaign fund-raising, a non-tax paying Treasury appointee, eye-popping promises of change that offer no real substance or realistic plans, corruption surrounding the prez-elect before he was even sworn in. Yeah! Yippee! Hallelujah! Just can't wait for the four-year roller coaster to leave the station.......wheeeeeeeee!

Funny, isn't it, how just four years ago the banjo-picking morons of the American left were slamming Bush for wasting precious money on his inauguration when there was (pick one) a war going on, a child starving in Africa, crime in the streets, a busted up washing machine in the middle of the freeway...you name it, those sycophants will always throw it at the wall, and they did. But now, all of sudden, things are different. Yes, sir. Even though we're supposedly in the middle of what could be the biggest depression since the Great D, soldiers are still fighting and dying Iraq, and that washing machine is still blocking the fast lane of the 101, it's perfectly alright to shell out millions to display their fealty to their new king--to prove their abject willingness to occupy the Monica Lewinsky desk in the West Wing of the Obama White House. Oh, kiss me, Barry. I think I'm going to faint! Have a cigar! These hypocrites make me sick, not to mention humiliated and embarrassed to be seen in the same country with them.

It was wrong in 2005 and it's still wrong to day to be throwing a huge party while we are in the midst of wars. FDR had the good sense to have his 1945 swearing in ceremony quietly in the White House followed by the serving of chicken salad sandwiches and pound cake. He knew that there are times when excess celebration is disgusting. Bush was wrong for his 40 Million dollar party in 2005 and Obama is equally wrong for his 170 Million dollar party. I cannot stomach ONE more "change" speech from the Almighty Obama. I've heard this man speak for 18 months about what he is going to do .... eventually! In front of Greek columns, the Lincoln Memorial, 20 American Flags, Hollywood Elite, the Oprah show and so on and so on. He is going to end the war and suffering, feed the hungry, bring peace to all nations, restoreth our souls, feed the multitudes, turn water into wine. Sad people truly believe that he is their Savior! Change we can believe in? What change? Taking money from CEO's and Executives that WE bailed out. Appointing Clinton has-beens to his cabinet. Spending 170 Million dollars while people are losing their jobs and cannot afford their homes. Are you kidding me?
