For A-Rod, 499 May Be 500

Posted Jul 27, 07 5:18 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez may have to re-label his memorabilia: homerun-ball 499 may turn out to be number 500. The Yankees resume their June 28 suspended game with Baltimore tomorrow, and if A-Rod smashes one before the day is out, it will be retroactively booked as homerun 493, promoting Wednesday's blast to number 500.

MLB rule 10.23 (d) specifies: "All performances in the completion of a suspended game shall be considered as occurring on the original date of the game." Yankee skipper Joe Torre similarly recorded his only five-hit game in a suspended 1971 match-up with St. Louis. Rodriguez is on track to usurp Jimmie Foxx as the youngest ever to reach the 500 mark.
