As they enter the White House, Malia and Sasha Obama can benefit from advice from two who know exactly what they’re going through: Jenna and Barbara Bush, who penned an open letter to the Obama girls in the Wall Street Journal. The twins offer advice on where to go (the staff Christmas party), who to see (staffer Ramsey’s the best hugger), and what to do (slide down the Solarium banister).

Other tips: don’t let presidential trips ruin your Halloween; trick-or-treat on the plane if you have to. Take comfort in your dog. “Go to anything and everything you possibly can.” As older kids, the Bushes write, “we were constantly inspired by the amazing people we met.” But “it’s not always easy” when the world thinks they know the man who raised you. “So here is our most important piece of advice: remember who your dad really is.”
