Grammys Should Turn Up the Volume

Oscars get much more attention

(Newser) – Academy Award nominations are all over the news, but people seem to have forgotten about the Grammys. “I didn't even know the Grammys still existed,” writes Dan Abramson on the Huffington Post, but “not only do the Grammy Awards still exist, they might even be coming up.” He can name the date, host, and nominees for the Oscars, “but the Grammys? I think they're in February.” (For the record, Feb. 8.)

What happened to the days when Abramson, and the rest of us, looked forward to the Grammys as a ceremony “really awarding the best of the best”? “Maybe the Internet has ruined the communal experience of music,” he speculates, or maybe music just “isn't as good these days.” Whatever the reason, these days even a huge fan like Abramson just isn’t as “excited, or even interested.”

Dan Abramson can't get excited about the Grammys even though he's much more of a music fan now than I was in 1992, when Boyz II Men was wearing matching outfits and thanking Michael Bivins.

Dan Abramson misses good music like Michael Jackson: I was only five years old at the time, but I can only assume that the 1988 Grammys were just a tribute to 'Bad,' he writes.

I thought the Grammys fell by the wayside around the time Carlos Santana recorded a romp with Rob Thomas, ruining our memory of both Santana and Matchbox 20 in the process. - Dan Abramson

The Grammys could've easily happened already and I wouldn't have noticed. Perhaps that dinner party I went to last week was really a Grammys party in disguise. It was boring enough and I think we listened to Beyonce. - Dan Abramson

Maybe there's no reason to get to excited for awards given to artists and bands that only show up on 'shuffle' while we're jogging with our iPod. - Dan Abramson

Perhaps folks with taste have always known the the music being celebrated is hardly real music at all, and do not wish to waste four hours of their life annually watching (in UpShotMatt's words) a music industry circle jerk. Ministry's win for 'The Great Satan' would be a recent exception to that logic, and it happens far too infrequently.
