(Newser) – A top Brazilian model who underwent the amputation of her hands and feet in an attempt to save her from a life-threatening infection died early this morning, CNN reports. Marianna Bridi di Costa was hospitalized in early January for septicemia triggered by a urinary tract infection. Doctors originally believed Bridi had kidney stones and did not detect the infection until the 20-year-old model was in septic shock.

In my ER , it's standard procedure to check for UTI's on anybody that presents with low back and or flank pain, without an obvious cause, and even in pediatrics, a fever without an obvious source, and they get the urinalysis done...the elderly in particular are very prone to this due to incontinance, and general level of "hygene" being less than that of an active and mobile adult......Themore people know about this kind of thing the more we can possibly prevent it from happening

What a shame. urinary tract infections are responsible for more deaths in the elderly female population, than most people realize. If an oppurtunistic pathogen makes it's way up the ureters and into the actual kidneys themselves, you have a very serious problem....Sounds to me like the Dr. screwed up, but I doubt there is enough info in the article to make that a definative point....
