Bonds Moves Within 1

Posted Jul 28, 07 1:06 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – Barry Bonds moved within one home run of Hank Aaron in the first inning last night in San Francisco, smacking his 20th round-tripper of the season and running his career total to 754. The slugger pumped his fist as he rounded the bases, and the Marlins then walked him four times as the Giants recorded a 12-10 victory.

Bonds hadn't homered in five games and hadn't connected at home since June 29 when he stepped in against Rick Vanden Hurk. The rookie right-hander offered up a 2-1 fastball, and Bonds drove it 420 feet over the wall in left center. When the chase resumes tonight, Dontrelle Willis has first crack at becoming the 21st century's Al Downing.
