(Newser) – A 93-year-old Michigan man who failed to pay his electricity bill froze to death in his home after the city cut his power supply, the Bay City Times reports. Marvin Schur suffered what a pathologist called "a slow painful death" from hypothermia several days after city workers installed a limiting device on his meter. Schur reportedly owed the city almost $1,100 in electricity bills.

A neighbor found Schur dead 10 days ago. "His furnace was not running. The insides of his windows were full of ice the morning we found him," the neighbor said. "This device is supposed to regulate the amount of electricity he was using but still allow enough power to run the furnace. Obviously, it didn't work."

Hypothermia shuts the whole system down, slowly. It's not easy to die from hypothermia without first realizing your fingers and toes feel like they're burning. - Dr. Kanu Virani, Oakland County's deputy chief medical examiner

Cut taxes for the rich! Let people like Schur pay for public and social services, just like they ought to. The rich can take their money to warmer climes! The poor are most able to pay for public services! Duh! We know that's true because the Republicans tell us so.

Rather freeze to death than burn to death -- I mean, if I get to choose

There are protocols requiring contacting the dweller prior to such actions... They've failed on all counts. No matter what, there is an obligation to seek the well being of people, no matter the case / cause. This horrible and inexcusable death calls for manslaughter / second degree murder to fall directly upon the utility; especially the utility field technician(s) who installed the limiting device. Accountability is paramount in preventing such occurrences from repeating themselves...
