House GOP Pounces on Visiting Obama

President 'all form—not substance' on stimulus, one lawmaker says

(Newser) – President Obama’s visit with House Republicans on Capitol Hill today, intended as an olive branch, instead turned into a forum for grievances about Obama’s stimulus proposals, Politico reports. The GOP is steadfast in its push for more tax cuts, but Obama isn’t budging, either. “Feel free to whack me over the head,” he said, “because I probably will not compromise on that part.”

“He won’t compromise on more tax cuts,” one lawmaker said. “All form—not substance.” Still, GOP leaders were careful to applaud the initiative, and to push the blame onto House Dems. “We are grateful for his outreach, we are grateful for the spirit of bipartisanship,” said one House Republican. “It’s not so much his effort, it’s what the House has done with this bill, what Pelosi has done with this bill,” another said.

This is bad policy and we think, Mr. President, with all due respect that you’re getting some bad advice, maybe from Ms. Pelosi, maybe from Mr. Reid. It in no way shape or form looks like true emergency spending. - Rep. Tom Price

This is a very dangerous political vote for House Republicans, in particular those from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan. Their constituents want them to take action to save the economy, not block progress. - Unnamed White House aide

I recognize that we're not going to get 100 percent of support but I think everybody there felt good that I'm willing to explain how I put the package together, how we were thinking about it. - President Barack Obama

Does 'flagged' mean you are attempting to censor a remark that hurt your itty-bitty feelings? You're in a poli-blog. Grow a pair if you're going to post here

John McCain weighed in by saying that he wanted to rewrite the stimulus plan himself. For 30 yrs. the Republicans have voted for more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans who don't need it. The economy does well only when the middle class does well.

The GOP has the same playbook they have used since 1980. Obstructionism and slime. Too bad it failed in 2006 and 2008. Will they learn anything from these failures? Doesn't seem like they have. Enjoy the wilderness GOP. You will be there a long time and you deserve to be.
