Turkey PM Storms Off After Clash With Peres on Gaza

(Newser) – Turkey's prime minister stormed off a stage in Davos today during a heated exchange with Israeli President Shimon Peres over Gaza, the New York Times reports. “When it comes to killing, you know well how to kill," Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Peres before walking off, promising never to return to Davos. Peres fired back that Turkey would have responded in kind had rockets been falling on Istanbul.

Erdogan also said Peres' tone of voice was rising during the session because of a guilty conscience. Afterward, Erdogan said he walked off not because of his disagreements with Peres but because the moderator—Washington Post columnist David Ignatius—failed to give him equal time, the BBC notes. Peres called Erdogan to make clear the disagreement was not personal.

(NEWSER) - Amid harsh international criticism of its deadly raid on a humanitarian aid ship headed to Gaza, Israel took a hard line yesterday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the raid and said Israel will continue its Gaza blockade. Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon declared: "We do not need to apologize for defending ourselves." The comments came as organizers of the attacked flotilla said another cargo ship is now en route to Gaza, the Los Angeles Times reports. 10 Killed as Israelis Storm Gaza Aid Ships

Dozens of mostly Turkish protesters injured

(NEWSER) - At least 10 pro-Palestinian activists were killed and dozens injured early today when Israeli troops stormed ships laden with aid for Gaza. The troops clashed with some 600 mostly Turkish protesters who confronted soldiers attempting to halt the 6-ship flotilla in international waters. The convoy was attempting to deliver aid through an Israeli blockade. Turkey blasted Israel's "inhumane practices" in a statement following the attack, and dozens of protesters tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. More»

UN Asks Davos for $613M in Gaza Aid

Funds would provide immediate aid, more money needed for long-term

(NEWSER) - The UN asked attendees at the Davos economic forum for $613 million to address “massive and multi-faceted” needs resulting from recent violence in Gaza, the BBC reports. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says the funds will provide medical care and clean water for 6-9 months. As fresh violence heightened the need for relief, the agency also asked Israel to lift its Gaza blockade. More»
