(NEWSER) - Easy livin' at California pot dispensaries is about to go up in smoke. Even though several shops are operating legally under the state law allowing them to dispense medical marijuana,16 have received letters from federal officials warning them to shut down—or be closed. Federal law "takes precedence over state law and applies regardless of the particular uses for which a dispensary is selling and distributing marijuana," states the letter obtained by AP . Neighbor's accelerator jammed as she backed out

(NEWSER) - A woman plowed her Mercury Grand Marquis into a neighbor's house outside Chicago yesterday, killing him and exposing his marijuana-growing operation, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 63-year-old's accelerator apparently jammed as she was pulling out of the driveway. The victim, Zachary Isenberg, 28, walked to his window just as the car drove into his living room. More»

(NEWSER) - Mike Huckabee has more to say on both of his recent headline-making statements: That Barack Obama grew up in Kenya , and that Natalie Portman is setting a bad example with her out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Mediaite reports Huckabee’s comments from Sirius Radio’s POTUS channel:

• On Kenya: “The reaction ranged from, ‘This guy is so dumb he doesn’t know that Barack Obama grew up in Indonesia not Kenya,’ all the way to the other extreme, I saw people like Andrea Mitchell saying, ‘Oh no, he did this on purpose, he is very smart and shrewd, he did this in a calculating way.' Well, I can’t be both. I can’t be the dumbest guy in the room and the smartest guy in the room at the same time. I have to be one or the other, or maybe it was just that I made a mistake, I corrected it.”

Country music star must still like to get high

(NEWSER) - Apparently, Willie Nelson still enjoys the occasional doobie. The country music star was arrested—right out of his tour bus—at a border patrol checkpoint in Texas yesterday for possessing 6 ounces of marijuana, KVIA reports. He was booked in county jail but later freed on bond. This is just the latest of several run-ins with the law Nelson’s entourage has had, including a citation earlier this year at the very same checkpoint. More»

Family members question 'car accident' story

(NEWSER) - The official story is that President Obama’s father died after crashing his car into a tree—but Obama’s family in Kenya fears foul play had a hand in his death, according to a book Peter Firstbrook is working on about the Obamas. Though Barack Sr.’s car appeared to have hit a tree, “he didn’t look like somebody who was involved in an accident,” the president’s cousin told Firstbrook. His grandmother told a similar tale. "His body was never broken, his vehicle was not badly crashed. He was just dead after the accident. Not even much blood was seen." More»
