Daschle Waited to Tell Obama About Tax Glitch

HHS nominee knew his taxes needed fixing; didn't know how much

Share

(Newser) – Health secretary-designate Tom Daschle didn’t tell the Obama administration that he owed years of back taxes until a month after he’d been nominated, the Washington Post reports. He paid $140,000 in taxes January 2 and told government leaders about it two days later. He had known his taxes needed fixing but didn’t know the “jaw-dropping” amount owed and thought his accountant was dealing with it, a rep said.

“The president believes nobody's perfect but that nobody's hiding anything,” said Obama’s press secretary. Meanwhile, a report Daschle submitted to officials shows how without becoming a registered lobbyist, he made $5 million giving speeches and advice to various industries, including $220,000 from health care, prompting concerns that he’s the kind of Washington insider Obama has railed against.

The he should have come clean... There's absolutely no excuse for non disclosure nor intentionally subverting our tax system. You may not agree with every aspect of our tax system, but as a politician, it show utter hypocrisy in the matter. How can I/we trust such people when in the highest echelons of government, they flaunt their utter ignorance and insolence towards OUR system while in/out of government? We as people toe the line while our leaders blatantly cheat...? I just don't understand - No matter which side of the house you come from... Reply

And my Mom is convinced, if she doesn't report the $5 a week she earns doing housework for her aged neighbor, she'll go to jail. Sheesh Reply

If they still confirm Daschle, every citizen who fails to properly declare income will certainly have a case against being penalized if their own government can get away with it. Reply
