UK Protester Lobs Shoe at China's Wen

Protester calls premier a 'dictator' during speech at Cambridge

(Newser) – A protester threw a shoe at China’s premier while he was giving a speech at Cambridge University in England today, the BBC reports. The young man shouted “how can the university prostrate itself with this dictator—how can you listen to the lies he’s telling?" before hurling a shoe at the podium, missing Wen Jiabao by about 3 feet. Wen called the incident “despicable.”

I'd like to know what he was speaking on. (I'm too lazy to look) Was it about the good things they are doing to clean out Darfur's population or the arms they kindly tried to deliver to Zimbabwe? Reply

The protester was only arrested for suspicion of a public order offence? This man is a prime minister of another country, regardless of what people feel about that country, and arresting a man under just those charges is insulting Reply

Good, they treat the vast majority of their population badly and have made it easy for the powerful in this country to treat our population badly by off shoring tons of manufacturing to factories staffed by peasants forcibly removed from their land so they would have to work in factories. Unfortunately, we have cut our own throats as well, by shopping at Walmart. The prices look great until you see the cost of the prices.

(BBC) 'The shoe landed about a metre away from Mr Wen and the protester, a young man, was then removed by security guards. Mr Wen, who earlier signed a series of trade agreements with Gordon Brown on the final day of a three-day UK visit, described the incident as "despicable".' There's a video of the incident if you'll click the link, but no captioning of Mr. Wen's words... Perhaps later. I disagree with China on many things, but thought the incident out of character for the occasion. Just my thoughts... Reply
