Florida GOPer Resigns After Tasteless Katrina Joke

Resigns after email mocking trapped "blacks"

Share

(Newser) – Carol Carter, a Florida Republican committeewoman, isn’t racist. It’s just that she likes Katrina jokes. So much that she emailed this one around last week: “How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?” After GOP higher-ups were not amused, Carter resigned her position last night, reports the St. Petersburg Times.

Carter is the real victim, swear her friends. Says Janice Torgerson, another local official, “I've known Carol for many, many years and I know she doesn't have a racist bone in her body.” And, though she “can’t condone” Carter’s taste in humor, she says it's “tragically sad to be losing someone like her.”

Our party is is the party of Abraham Lincoln, is the party that has fought traditionally for African-Americans,. And now for the third time this year to be accused of racism is a stake in our heart. - Janice Torgersen, Hillsborough Co. Republican Executive Committee official

Carol Carter has been a hard-working, loyal Republican for many years. I appreciate her many notable contributions to our party, but this action I have no tolerance for, regardless of the circumstances or intent.
- Jim Greer, Florida GOP chairman

Where is the joke in her email? Even though it would still be tasteless and racist, if it were truly a joke, there would be some kind of punchline or follow up to close the joke. No, this is nothing but a racist rhetorical question that has no part in our government officials' communications but all so typical in many of our republican officials. And to say Carter is the real victim is truly an insult beyond belief. Her only regret is that it got out and forced her to resign. Don't worry Carol, I'm sure Rush Limbaugh has an open writer position that you would be extremely qualified for. And if you're suffering with a lot of emotional pain at the moment, I'm also pretty certain he has one or two spare bottles of Oxycontin to float your way. Reply
