SC Cops Make Arrests in Phelps Case

Man who used to live in pot party house hit with possession

Share

(AP) – Police in the county where Michael Phelps was photographed smoking a bong have been arresting people as they seek to make a case against the swimmer, a South Carolina defense lawyer says. The attorney said he has a client who was questioned about the now-infamous party Phelps attended near the University of South Carolina in November—and charged with possession of marijuana.

The lawyer says his client used to be a renter at the house where the party took place, but has since moved out of the city. He says sheriff's deputies searched his client's new home in the past week.

I don't care about any of this but where is the proof? Is there physical evidence other than hearsay and a photo. Can we now arrest people by a picture of apparent malfeasance without underlying proof? This is a witchhunt. Reply

Observing - This all appears to be some kind of a witch-hunt. Truly embarrassing... With our looming financial crisis, where are the funds to investigate such a miniscule infraction? The authorities are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Phelps already apologized, and I for one, honestly believe him. With the majority of his endorsements at risk... it should be noted; This was done for monetary gain, regardless of the damage it would inflict. Enough is enough. I feel truly bad for Phelps and the scam artist who is practicing extortion for monetary gain. And again, where's the indisputable evidence - what evidence? What was in the bong - turkish tobacco? I hope Phelps discovers the individual who took and solicited the photo(s) and sues them back to the stone age for invasion of privacy, intent to damage one's integrity, credibility and character. Enough is enough. Reply

Newser, usually you make alot of sense (except the damned censoring thing you do) but you're off-base on the suing part of your rant. What privacy should Phelps had expected at a party in someone else's home filled with many non-residence of said house? And tell me, what law says it's illegal to 'intent to damage one's integrity, credibility and character' with a statement of fact? The truth is an affirmative defense --- As to the article, yeah, the pig is outta control and his constituents should be outraged at the squandering of their city's resources on a victimless non-crime
