Hamas Agrees to Gaza Truce

Share

(Newser) – Hamas says its negotiators have a reached a deal with Israel for a long-term Gaza truce, Reuters reports. A senior leader said the truce ensures the opening of all commercial crossings and will be announced over the weekend. The Egyptian-brokered pact would replace a tentative truce put in place last month after a 22-day Israeli offensive left 1,300 Palestinians dead. Israel, in the midst of election chaos, had no official comment.

It appears like this is good news for the Palestinian people in Gaza. It all really depends on what "the opening of all commercial crossings" means? Either way, any opening of the borders represents an improvement over pre-Gaza war conditions. Reply

Gee ya think?...1300 dead in 22 days....hmmmm...maybe just maybe they got the idea that frequent rocket launches, suicide bombings is bad for their health.....I still say isreal should have bombed them harder drive the point home real hard..".Leave us alone"...I bet if they quit the BS long enough, imposed restrictions would begin to go away, as trust is built...but maybe not Reply

This actually could be considered a victory for Hamas depending upon the exact conditions. The reason for the rocket attacks was because of the mostly closed borders and the blockade around Gaza since June 2007. The stranglehold was causing a humanitarian crisis even before the war started. Of course, I'm sure you would love to believe that the reason for the rocket attacks was more simple (good vs. evil). Unfortunately, reality is much more complex than that.
