Fred Thompson's White House campaign is in trouble before it has even officially begun, according to the Washington Post's campaign diary. Short of money and minus a manager, the unannounced Thompson is tied for last in the polls with the floundering John McCain.

How did the actor's train derail before it left the station? The Post blames the shadow campaign's "total chaos—they don't even have a basic feel for the fundamentals of a presidential campaign." And the endless prologue—Thompson isn't even expected to announce until September—hasn't helped a candidate with a name-recognition deficit. (More Fred Thompson stories.)
