(Newser) – Two Illinois Republicans are calling on Sen. Roland Burris to resign amid allegations he committed perjury during the Rod Blagojevich impeachment hearings, Fox News reports. State representatives Jim Durkin and Tom Cross are also demanding an outside investigation. "I think it would be in the best interest of the state if he resigned because I don't think the state can stand this anymore,” Durkin said, the AP reports.

Burris revealed this weekend that Blagojevich’s brother asked him for donations to the governor’s campaign, something he neglected to mention during his January testimony.
Burris denies wrongdoing, saying just wanted to “supplement my answer with other events that I have been able to recall." His critics are "playing partisan politics," Burris said.

It's a completely contradictory statement. Do I think he committed perjury? Yes. - House Republican Leader Tom Cross

Yes, I had contacts with representatives and friend of the former governor about the Senate appointment. None of it inappropriate. - U.S. Sen Roland Burris

Forget the controversy, what about the fact that he's not even qualified to be a US Senator! His only public service is Illinois Attorney General for 4 years and Illinois's Comptroller, whatever that is. He is not qualified to have as much power as he does. Get him out and let's get rid of the rule that says a Gov can pick replacements even if he is under a federal investigation. That's just insane.

I would love to say I didn't see this one coming, but I can't....the appointment whether legit or not...was tainted by all the circumstance, and of course anybody who opposed it or defended it will get picked apart by the other side.....let the spin begin...yeeeeeha
