President receives warm welcome in the frost on first foreign trip

(Newser) – Barack Obama found a new world of fans north of the border yesterday. His first foreign trip as president was greeted by a rare wave of pro-American sentiment on the streets of Ottawa, reports the Los Angeles Times. Thousands of people stood for hours in the slush in front of Parliament and along his motorcade route waiting for a glimpse of the president, holding signs with slogans like "Yes We CANada."

The president thanked his Canadian supporters after a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper following their meeting yesterday, acknowledging his popularity in a country where polls show his approval rating is slightly higher than in the US—and almost 50 points higher than Harper's.

Joy to the World!... America finally has a president who is NOT a misbehaving chimp! (Take that, NY Post.)

I've contemplated, sometimes jokingly, sometimes seriously, moving to Canada. I'd actually be able to use the years of French I learned in some parts! I've heard how good their healthcare systems are also.

America is a self-made nation so prosperous an self-contained it has been in a position where it didn't have to look outside its own borders. Everything that was needed or desired could be found at home. Except circumspection. Obviously the last few years have shown that that arrogance born of insularity was not a virtue. So it might be time to quit the facile 'why do we care?' bollocks...because that attitude will eventually spell America's demise. You'll care then.
