Milwaukee's Dolan Named NY Archbishop

Genial but conservative leader succeeds Cardinal Egan

(Newser) – The pope today named Timothy Dolan, who leads the archdiocese of Milwaukee, as the new Roman Catholic archbishop of New York. Dolan is 59, relatively young for promotion to such a prestigious seat—which normally comes with an elevation to cardinal. While he is doctrinally conservative, Dolan is less confrontational than many of his traditionalist colleagues, reports the New York Times.

Dolan succeeds Cardinal Edward Egan, who improved the church's finances but was accused of being distant and imperious. In Milwaukee, Dolan helped steady the church after an earlier archbishop departed in a sex abuse scandal—and won the admiration of Green Bay Packers fans by donning a "cheese head" hat one Sunday. But he has disappointed some advocates of abuse victims for failing to oust all offenders from the church.
