Beleaguered Astros starter Jason Jennings came through as a pinch-hitter last night, driving in Jason Lane in the top of the 14th to down the Braves. Houston pitchers had tried mightily to give the game away: Woody Williams allowed seven runs in five frames, and closer Brad Lidge blew a save on a two-run homer in the 12th.

In the past four games, the Astros' staff has been particularly woeful, allowing 53 runs in three losses; starters have had an ERA above 20. Probably the worst performances came from—yes, Jennings. He was shelled for 11 runs in the first inning of his last start and gave up another run in his first relief appearance 2 days ago. (More MLB stories.)
